Kono mussel opener Angela Fredericks has etched her name in the record books with a super shucking performance at the Havelock Mussel Festival.
Angela opened 100 mussels in 1min59secs, knocking 12 seconds off the previous record which had stood since 2007, to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
With 11-years-experience, Angela is consistently one of the industry’s best openers averaging 1500-2000 mussels per hour.
But after winning the individual final in a time of 2mins34sec, Angela had over a 1000 spectators cheering her on as she attempted to close in on the record.
“There was heaps of pressure,” said Angela who chose to open with the crowd at her back.
“All I was thinking was I didn’t want to hear everyone sigh in disappointment if I didn’t make it.
“I didn’t want to disappoint my supervisors and my team.
“I like working at Kono. The people are great. There’s heaps of really good openers here .”
