Greenshell mussel farmers are uniting to secure and diversify spat supply, optimise its use and increase hatchery production to seed growth over the next decade.
An industry working group that formed to sure up a consistent and high-quality supply of seed mussels, has published the New Zealand Greenshell Spat Strategy to align industry initiatives and research efforts.
“This spat strategy recognises the critical nature of spat in the mussel industry’s growth ambitions to reach $1 billion by 2035,” said strategy author and Aquaculture New Zealand Technical Director Dave Taylor.
“A key step in achieving this goal is the development of this spat strategy to guide our research, innovation, and productive focus for the next decade.
“Through a working group process, the industry has identified three strategic objectives:
“To secure a consistent, diverse and high-quality supply of spat to support the industry’s productivity and resilience goals.
“To increase on-farm retention of spat for greater production performance, and.
“To increase hatchery production for greater spat retention, resilience, and value.”
