Farming of New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels commenced in the 1970’s to better manage the production of this species (Perna canaliculus).
After trialling different techniques the long-line method of cultivation – growing mussels on suspended ropes proved to be the most effective technique, allowing the mussels to be farmed utilising only natural and environmentally friendly processes.
With this method, the mussels were found to grow to market size in 12-18 months, being fatter and more tender than those from the wild.
The farming practices of New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels have evolved over the years due to the dedication and innovative thinking of the industry pioneers.
This innovation has allowed the industry to satisfy global demand for New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels from over 70 countries.
