Futurists, innovators and global experts to headline 2026 AQNZ conference

Melissa Clark-Reynolds

Zarn and Michelle Reichardt

A renowned street-smart futurist who has advised governments and Fortune 500 companies will be among the headline speakers at the 2026 Aquaculture New Zealand Conference in Nelson on 14-15 October.

Melissa Clark-Reynolds is a futurist, tech entrepreneur and strategic adviser who helps leaders ‘cut through the noise, navigate uncertainty and tackle change head-on’.

Trained by the Institute for the Future and appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the technology industry, Melissa has worked with organisations ranging from Spark and IAG to NASA.

Her conference presentation is titled Practical futurism for a world that doesn't wait.

The conference will also feature one of aquaculture's most compelling business stories. Michelle and Zarn Reichardt of The Kutai Guy will share their journey of building a successful mussel business in Northland to their recent decision to expand and relocate operations to a small town in the South Island.

Delegates will also have an opportunity to learn more about Hananui, the landmark Ngāi Tahu open-ocean salmon farming development proposed for Rakiura Stewart Island.

Tee Hale Pennington, Chief Executive of Aquaculture New Zealand, says the conference reflects the growing importance of aquaculture to New Zealand's primary sector and regional communities.

This year's programme brings together an exceptional mix of thinkers, innovators, scientists and business leaders. From emerging technology and open-ocean farming to climate resilience and food security, these are conversations that matter well beyond the aquaculture sector."

Delegates will hear from Norwegian aquaculture technology specialists, leading New Zealand researchers and industry pioneers who are helping shape the future of sustainable marine farming.

Over the two days more than 500 delegates and around 50 speakers are registered to attend, making it one of New Zealand's largest gatherings focused on aquaculture, marine science and innovation.

Government perspectives will feature throughout the programme, including an opening address from Jenny Marcroft, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Oceans and Fisheries, and a presentation from Chris Bishop, Minister Responsible for RMA Reform.
