Recognition for service and leadership at 2026 oyster industry awards
Two leaders whose dedication has helped shape the future of New Zealand's oyster industry have been recognised at the 2026 New Zealand Oyster Industry Association (NZOIA) Conference.
Annual industry awards were presented to Lynette Dunn and Dan Lees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the sector.
The awards are presented each year to a woman and a man who have made a significant impact on the oyster industry over the previous 12 months. Recipients are selected by the NZOIA Executive Committee following nominations and an assessment of those whose efforts have delivered the greatest benefit to the industry.
NZOIA President Aaron Pannell, who led the selection process, said both recipients had made exceptional contributions deserving of recognition.
"Lynette Dunn epitomises the passion and persistence of those who work every day to grow a premium New Zealand product in the face of rising costs and a constantly changing environment," he said.
"The outcome achieved by the Mahurangi Oyster Farmers Association, driven by Lynette's leadership, has created a groundbreaking precedent that has empowered small-scale farmers across the country."
Aaron also paid tribute to the important role Dan Lees has played in supporting the oyster industry for more than two decades.
"Dan's experience and extensive knowledge of marine farming has helped transform the culture of his MPI department from an enforcement-focused regulator into a valued supporter and champion of the aquaculture industry," he said.
Lynette Dunn received the women's award for her exceptional leadership and advocacy on behalf of Mahurangi oyster farmers.
An oyster farmer for more than 25 years through Orata Marine, Lynette stepped into the role of President of the Mahurangi Oyster Farmers Association in 2023 as growers faced unprecedented challenges following wastewater overflows into the harbour.
During a challenging and uncertain period, she became a tireless advocate for affected farmers, raising awareness through media engagement and discussions with local communities and political leaders. Her leadership helped secure compensation for growers and contributed to the establishment of a new relay site in Kaipara Harbour, providing a pathway forward for the Mahurangi oyster industry.
Dan Lees received the men's award for his longstanding support of Mahurangi farmers and the wider oyster sector.
Working behind the scenes alongside industry and iwi partners, Dan played a pivotal role in advancing the Mahurangi-Pāhi project. He helped secure funding, navigate complex regulatory and consenting processes, and foster collaboration among stakeholders to overcome numerous challenges.
His practical approach, persistence and commitment were instrumental in creating what is expected to become a landmark partnership between Mahurangi farmers and Te Uri o Hau, delivering long-term benefits for the industry.
“Together, Lynette Dunn and Dan Lees have shown how leadership, persistence and collaboration can help secure a stronger future for New Zealand’s oyster industry.”
