Mid: Up to $110,000
Senior: Up to $120,000

An aquaculture Skipper is responsible for operating and managing vessels that support aquaculture operations such as mussel, oyster or salmon farms.

They ensure the safe navigation and operation of boats used to transport staff, equipment and marine livestock and may also be involved in farming activities like seeding, harvesting and maintenance of marine farm structures. They are responsible for the leadership and safety of all onboard.

Key tasks

  • Operate vessels safely within aquaculture marine areas

  • Manage crew and ensure adherence to health and safety protocols

  • Monitor vessel stability and respond to environmental changes

  • Ensure compliance with Maritime New Zealand, Health and Safety and Fisheries legislation

  • Recording operational and safety logs, including navigation and weather data.

Entry level

  • Current Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) ticket with 24m and 500-tonne endorsement.

  • Minimum of 3 years mussel farming experience preferred

  • Good leadership and communication skills

  • Preferably to have a current driving licence

Qualifications that can be achieved

  • Crane Handling

  • Radio Operator Certificate (e.g., Maritime VHF)
