Deckhand

As an aquaculture Deckhand, you will work as part of a crew on marine farms, helping to grow, maintain, and harvest premium seafood such as mussels, salmon, and oysters.

It is a physically active job that requires teamwork, a strong work ethic, and a love for the ocean. 

Normal working week is 4 days on 4 days off on a rota basis.

Key tasks

  • Deploying and retrieving growing lines, spat catchers and flats

  • Cleaning biofouling from lines, ropes, and structures

  • Harvesting mature product using hydraulic or manual equipment

  • Sorting and grading shellfish onboard or at processing sites

  • Assisting with farm maintenance: repairing floats, ropes, anchors

  • Operating deck equipment such as winches and cranes

  • Assisting with vessel maintenance

  • Complying with health, safety, and marine regulations

Entry level

  • No formal qualifications for entry into the position.

  • Physically fit and comfortable with heavy lifting and manual work.     

  • Reliable, safety-conscious and able to work in a team 

  • Marine experience or background in farming, fishing or trades is beneficial but not required

  • Minimum Age 16

  • Preferably to have a current driving licence   

Qualifications that can be achieved

  • Crane handling

  • PITO - L3 Certificate in Shellfish, L4 Certificate in Shellfish

  • First Aid, Forklift, Working at Heights

  • Future Pathways 
    Skipper - SRL endorsed to 24m, then to 500 GT.
