Technician
Salary: $50,000 - $67,000
Support scientific research through routine laboratory and field work in areas such as microbiology, toxin testing, aquaculture, or algae.
Technicians work collaboratively, adhere to strict quality and safety protocols—particularly in IANZ-accredited labs—and contribute directly to research outcomes and the reliable operation of scientific processes.
What you’ll do
Perform routine laboratory analyses, including sample preparation, analytical testing, and equipment maintenance in areas such as microbiology and natural toxins.
Support aquaculture research by assisting with animal husbandry, maintaining recirculating systems, collecting data, performing necropsies, and assessing water quality.
Manage seaweed research facilities, monitoring water quality, maintaining algal cultures, and supporting propagation studies.
Assist with natural toxins analysis, including biotoxin testing using advanced tools (e.g., LC-MS/MS) and microalgae microscopy.
What we’re looking for
Minimum qualification is a BSc (e.g. Aquaculture, Biology, Chemistry) or a relevant diploma
Practical experience in a lab setting—especially in an IANZ-accredited or commercial laboratory is highly advantageous
Proficiency in lab techniques like microscopy, instrumentation, LIMS, sample preparation and data handling is valuable
Physical capability, as the hands-on nature of the role may require you to lift up to 20kg.
Where to from here?
Technicians usually start in entry-level roles and can progress to senior or lead technician positions with experience.
Further career advancement, such as moving into Research Scientist roles, often requires additional qualifications (e.g. MSc or PhD) along with extensive hands-on experience.
